If you’ve ever searched for a board game that’s not too complicated but still keeps everyone engaged, I have one that we’ve been loving for years.
Quacks has been one of our go-to games for a long time now, and it’s still just as fun as when we first started playing it.
What I love most about it is the balance. It’s not overly strategic where you feel like you need to “study” the game before playing, but it’s also not just luck. It lands right in that middle ground where every decision matters… but anyone can win.
The basic idea is you’re building your own potion by pulling ingredients out of a bag. Sounds simple, but here’s where it gets interesting—if you push your luck too far, your potion explodes. So every round turns into this internal debate of “just one more” vs. “I should probably stop.”
And if you’re anything like me, you’ll say “just one more” way too often.

Another reason this game doesn’t get old is the variety. There are different ingredient combinations you can play with, so you can switch things up each time. You can also start with a simpler version of the game and add more elements as you get comfortable.

We’ve played it as a two-player game on a regular night at home, but it’s also been a hit with friends. It’s one of those games that’s easy to teach, which makes it perfect when you’re introducing something new to a group.
We actually shared it with a couple of our friends recently, and they loved it so much they immediately bought the expansion and went all in—which honestly says a lot.
One thing I will say—it’s definitely better suited for older kids (think preteens and up), so this is more of a date night or friends kind of game in our house right now.
If you’ve been wanting to switch things up from the usual routine or add something new to your game nights, this is one I’d absolutely recommend.
Have a favorite board game we should try next? Drop it in the comments—I’m always looking for new ones to add to our list!
