Back to school season can feel a little like someone hit the fast-forward button on life.
Suddenly there are school supplies to find, backpacks to organize, schedules to figure out, lunches to pack, activities to remember—and somehow we’re also supposed to have our entire house, routines, health, and lives completely back in order.
No thanks. 😂
I’ve learned that I don’t need a perfect back-to-school routine. I just need a few little things that make our days easier.
And honestly? That’s what I’m focusing on this year.
You Don’t Have to Do Everything at Once
If you have big plans for this school year, I’m right there with you.
Maybe you want to get back into a workout routine. Maybe you want to organize the house, start a new hobby, read more, spend more time on your business, or finally tackle that project you’ve been putting off all summer.
But here’s the thing: you don’t have to do all of it in August.
The kids going back to school doesn’t magically give you unlimited time and energy.
Give yourself some time to figure out what your new normal actually looks like first. Once everyone knows where they need to be and when they need to be there, you can start adding things in.
One at a time.

Find a Morning Routine That Works for You
My mornings don’t need to be complicated.
Once I get the kids off to school and to the bus stop, I’m planning to head to my workout. Then I’ll come home, wash my face, put on my Face Milk, and move on with my day.
That’s it.
I don’t need a 12-step morning routine to feel like I’ve taken care of myself.
And if you’re someone who works outside the home or needs to get out the door quickly, finding a few things that make your morning easier can make a huge difference.
Maybe that’s a five-minute makeup routine. Maybe it’s keeping your favorite tinted lip balm in your bag. Maybe it’s having your skincare products ready to go.
It doesn’t have to be complicated. Ready is good enough.
Make Lunches Easier on Yourself
I also refuse to believe that every school lunch needs to look like a Pinterest board.
Some days it’s a cute little balanced lunch.
Other days it’s, “Here are some things you like. Please eat them.” 😂
And that’s okay.
Having a few easy staples on hand makes a huge difference. Things like:
- Frozen pizza bites or other freezer-friendly favorites
- Cut-up fruit
- Cheese sticks
- Yogurt
- Crackers
- Sandwiches or wraps
- Veggies that are already washed and ready to grab
- Muffins or other baked goods from the freezer
I love having things in the freezer that I can pull out when we’re short on time. It takes a little extra effort when you’re prepping them, but future me is always very grateful.
And that’s really the theme here: do a little work when you have the time so busy-you doesn’t have to do as much later.
Use Shortcuts That Actually Save You Time
You don’t need a complicated system. You just need to figure out which parts of your day consistently make you feel rushed or overwhelmed—and make those parts easier.
For us, that might mean having breakfast options ready to go, doubling a dinner so we have leftovers, keeping easy lunchbox foods stocked, or taking a few minutes at night to check what’s happening the next day.
And one of the biggest things that keeps our whole family organized is our Skylight Calendar.
Before we had it, I would spend time at the beginning of the month taking everything from our written calendar and adding it to our family calendar. Then things would change. Or I’d schedule something while I wasn’t at home and forget to add it later.
Now, things like sports schedules, birthday parties, meetings, and other commitments can all live in one place where our whole family can see them.
It’s one of those things that saves me time without me really having to think about it—which, during back-to-school season, is exactly what I want.
I’ll add my Skylight Calendar referral link here if you want to check it out.

Give Yourself Time to Adjust
Last week, I talked about easing back into the school routine instead of expecting everything to magically fall into place overnight.
This is really the same idea.
You don’t have to have it all figured out on the first day of school.
The first week might feel a little chaotic. The second week might be better. By the third week, you might finally know where everyone’s shoes are supposed to go. 😂
That’s okay.
You’re figuring it out as you go.
And once you get through those first few weeks, you’ll have a much better idea of what is actually working—and what needs to change.
That’s when you can start making bigger adjustments.
Choose Easier
This year, I’m trying to remember that I don’t need a massive overhaul.
I just need to get a little better at the things that make our everyday life easier.
One freezer meal.
One easier lunch.
One thing added to the calendar.
One small routine that makes tomorrow easier.
Pick one thing that would make your day easier. Do that.
You don’t have to do everything at once.
Back to school is a season—not a test you have to pass.
So if you’re feeling overwhelmed right now, take a breath. Give yourself some time to settle into your new routine, figure out what actually works for your family, and then make changes from there.
And once we’re settled into our new rhythm, maybe we’ll have a better idea of what kind of reset we actually need.
That’s what I’ll be talking about next week: the small reset I need after summer. A little planning, getting back into my fitness routine, taking care of my nails and myself, and figuring out what I want this next season to look like—without trying to change everything overnight.
