Every summer starts with the best intentions. We’ll make memories, spend time outside, keep everyone entertained, and somehow stay on top of the laundry.

Some days, it all comes together. Other days… not so much.

This summer, I’ve realized that having a little structure actually helps our family enjoy the fun parts even more.

Every weekday starts the same way. We head to the gym first thing in the morning. While I get my workout in, my boys have fun in Childwatch. I’ve never felt guilty about making that part of our routine because they’re seeing something I hope sticks with them for life—that taking care of your body matters. My workout gives me a mental reset, helps me manage stress, and gives me the energy to show up as the best version of myself for the rest of the day.

After the gym, we head home, and before any screens come on, my boys spend a little time working through a workbook for the next grade level. It’s our way of keeping those school skills fresh without making summer feel like school.

Then the day is ours.

Some days we’re at the pool or the library. Other days we’re running errands, playing outside, or heading to the driving range to hit a bucket of balls. Lately it’s been so hot that we’ve traded some outdoor adventures for game nights, movie nights, or reading together in the evenings. After we read as a family, the boys usually head to their rooms with another book to read on their own.

One thing I’ve learned is that a few simple routines make everything else run more smoothly.

Keeping healthy snacks stocked—cheese sticks, fresh fruit, nuts, yogurt, and other easy grab-and-go options—means the boys usually know what to reach for instead of asking me what they can have every few minutes. It’s a small thing, but it makes a big difference.

The laundry? I’m convinced that’s just part of life.

I’ve also found that the little things I do for myself help me enjoy the busy days more. Having my nails already done, taking a few minutes to get ready, and keeping my routines simple helps me feel put together, even when the day doesn’t go exactly as planned.

Our summer isn’t perfectly scheduled, and it isn’t completely carefree either.

It’s a rhythm that gives us structure where we need it, freedom where we want it, and plenty of space to make memories together.

That’s what summer looks like around here—and honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
